How we calculated your estimate

Roof area is the footprint multiplied by the pitch multiplier, which is the secant of the roof's angle — the exact geometric ratio between the sloped surface and the flat ground it covers. We then apply a shape factor, because hip and complex roofs hold more surface than a simple gable over the same footprint.

Roof pitch

The dominant factor. Pitch is expressed as rise over 12 inches of run — a 6/12 roof rises 6 inches for every foot.

Footprint

Measure at ground level along the outside walls, and include the overhang if you can reach it.

Roof shape

Hip roofs hold about 5% more surface than a gable over the same footprint. Complex roofs with dormers hold ~15% more.

Sections

A main roof plus a garage roof is two sections. Measure and add each one separately.

Never accept a quote priced off your house size

A 2,000 sq ft house does not have a 2,000 sq ft roof. If a contractor quotes from your listing without measuring, that tells you something about how they work.
